ACM Conversations: Three Nyonyas and an Esteemed Collaborator: Family Memories of Batik Making in Pekalongan
In 2017, the Peranakan Museum received an extraordinary gift of batiks by three generations of batik makers from Indonesia – Nyonya Oeij Soen King, her daughter-in-law Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing, and her granddaughter Jane Hendromartono. From the 1890s to 1980s, they produced impressive batiks in the renowned batik centre of Pekalongan on Java’s north coast.
In this two-part talk, the three daughters of Jane Hendromartono share their recollections of the family batik business. In part two, Muhammad Sahlan, son of Chamid Jasin, talks about his father’s successful collaboration with Jane. They will be joined in conversation by art historian and former director of ACM and the Peranakan Museum, Dr Alan Chong.
This talk is organised in conjunction with Batik Nyonya: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship
